Terms of Service

Last updated: June 3, 2026

Welcome to Bugle. These Terms govern your use of Bugle (the "Service"), operated by Nick Potter ("we", "us", "our"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

1. Research assistant, not legal advice

Bugle is a research assistant. It helps you locate, read, and understand what official statutes, administrative rules, and wildlife-agency proclamations say about hunting. It is not a law firm, not a lawyer, and not your attorney, and your use of the Service does not create an attorney-client relationship.

All answers are provided for informational and research purposes only. Answers are generated by combining AI models with the cited source documents shown under each assistant message. The cited official sources are the authoritative record; the assistant's summary is research support, not the law itself. You bear the entire risk as to the accuracy, completeness, currency, and usefulness of any answer. Before you act, verify the cited section against the official source and the relevant state wildlife agency.

We do not tell you whether a specific action is or isn't legal in absolute terms; we tell you what the cited sources say. If you have a question about whether a specific action is lawful, or about a citation, defense, or proceeding involving you, consult a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction or contact the relevant wildlife agency. Bugle will not, and cannot, provide legal advice.

2. Independent service — not a government agency

Bugle is an independent, private service. We are not a government agency and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any state wildlife agency, department of natural resources, or other government body. Links and citations to official sources are provided for your convenience and verification; they do not imply any endorsement, partnership, or official status. Official agency publications and personnel are always the controlling authority.

3. Your responsibility and assumption of risk

  • Compliance is yours. You are solely responsible for knowing and complying with all applicable hunting, wildlife, firearm, trespass, and licensing laws, and for confirming time-sensitive details — season dates, deadlines, fees, quotas, unit boundaries — against the official source before you act.
  • Hunting carries inherent risk. Hunting and related activities are inherently dangerous and legally consequential. You knowingly assume all risks arising from your decisions and conduct, including any reliance on the Service.
  • Verify before you act. Regulations change, editions are reissued each season, and AI can make mistakes. Do not treat any answer as a substitute for the official regulations or professional advice.

4. Coverage and currency

The Service currently covers the hunting regulations of a limited set of U.S. states, and we add states over time. Coverage of a state does not mean every rule, proclamation, or edition for that state is present or current. We work to keep our source copies up to date, but we do not guarantee that any regulation in the Service is complete, current, or free of error. For anything time-sensitive, the official agency source controls.

5. Your account

  • You must provide a valid email address and choose a password. Keep both confidential — you are responsible for activity on your account.
  • You must be old enough to enter a binding contract under the law of your residence (in the United States, typically 18, or the local age of majority).
  • One person, one account. Don't share credentials.
  • We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, abuse the Service, or attempt to bypass rate limits or security measures.

6. Subscriptions and billing

The Service is currently free. If and when we introduce paid plans, the following will apply:

  • Payment processor. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card number. Your purchase is also subject to Stripe's terms.
  • Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same term at the then-current price until you cancel. We'll disclose the price and billing interval before you purchase.
  • Cancellation. You can cancel anytime; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access until then.
  • Refunds. Except where required by law, fees are non-refundable, including for partial periods. We may offer refunds at our discretion.
  • Changes. We may change prices or plan features; changes apply to the next renewal after reasonable notice.
  • Fair use. Plans are for individual research use and are subject to rate limits and reasonable-use caps so a single account cannot run up our AI-provider costs.

7. Acceptable use

Don't do any of the following while using Bugle:

  • Use the Service to plan, encourage, or facilitate illegal hunting, poaching, trespass, or any violation of wildlife law.
  • Scrape, copy, or redistribute Bugle's outputs at scale without permission. Personal research use is fine; commercial republishing isn't.
  • Reverse-engineer, probe for vulnerabilities, or attempt to extract our underlying prompts, model configurations, or other users' data.
  • Submit content that is unlawful, abusive, or that you don't have the right to share.

8. Email and communications

Transactional email. By creating an account you consent to receive transactional email necessary to operate the Service: account verification, security alerts, password resets, billing notices, and similar messages. These are not marketing and cannot be opted out of while your account is active.

Marketing and product-update email is opt-in only. Grant consent at signup or later in settings, and withdraw it anytime via the unsubscribe link or by emailing help@getbugle.com. Withdrawing marketing consent does not affect transactional email.

9. AI processing of your queries

To answer your questions, Bugle sends the text of your query (and recent conversation context) to third-party AI providers — currently Anthropic (generation and analysis), Voyage AI (embeddings), and Cohere (reranking). Each provider processes your input under its own data-handling terms. We do not use your conversations to train our models or any third party's models. See our Privacy Policy for what data flows where.

10. Intellectual property

The Service — including its software, design, prompts, the curated and structured regulation corpus, and Bugle's name and marks — is owned by Nick Potter and protected by law. The underlying government statutes, rules, and proclamations are public records; our compilation, organization, and presentation of them are ours. We grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for your personal, non-commercial research. You retain ownership of the questions and content you submit, and you grant us a license to process them to operate, secure, and improve the Service as described in the Privacy Policy.

11. Service availability and changes

Bugle is offered on an "as is" and "as available" basis without uptime guarantees. We may modify or discontinue features, change the underlying models, or update the source regulations at any time. The cited regulations themselves change as states update their codes — we try to keep our copy current, but you must verify against the official source for time-sensitive questions.

12. No warranties

THE SERVICE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ANY WARRANTY THAT THE CONTENT IS ACCURATE, COMPLETE, CURRENT, OR ERROR-FREE. NO ADVICE OR INFORMATION, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN, OBTAINED FROM THE SERVICE CREATES ANY WARRANTY NOT EXPRESSLY STATED HERE.

13. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, NICK POTTER AND ANYONE INVOLVED IN OPERATING IT (INCLUDING ITS CONTRACTORS AND SUPPLIERS) WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, OR GOODWILL, OR FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, FINES, CITATIONS, LOSS OF HUNTING PRIVILEGES, OR OTHER LOSS, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE OR YOUR RELIANCE ON ANY CONTENT — WHETHER BASED IN CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, OR ANY OTHER THEORY, AND EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY. THIS INCLUDES, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY OUTCOME OF ACTING ON AN ANSWER WITHOUT VERIFYING IT AGAINST THE CITED SOURCES OR THE OFFICIAL AGENCY.

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (a) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (b) US $100. SOME JURISDICTIONS DON'T ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU; IN THAT CASE OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED.

14. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Nick Potter and anyone involved in operating the Service from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from or related to: (a) your use of the Service; (b) your violation of these Terms or of any law or regulation; (c) your reliance on any answer; or (d) content you submit.

15. Termination

You may delete your account at any time by contacting help@getbugle.com. On account deletion we delete your conversations, messages, feedback, and profile within 30 days, subject to limited retention for legal compliance and abuse prevention. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms — with notice where practical, and immediately when necessary to protect the Service or other users. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including IP, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification) survive.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Before filing anything, you agree to first try to resolve a dispute informally by emailing help@getbugle.com and giving us 30 days to respond. Any dispute that isn't resolved informally will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Utah, and you consent to their jurisdiction. To the extent permitted by law, claims must be brought in an individual capacity and not as part of a class action.

17. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms over time. Material changes will be announced via email (to the address on your account) and posted here with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.

18. Miscellaneous

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service. If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision isn't a waiver. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them to a successor (e.g. in a merger or acquisition). We aren't liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
